Upcoming Presentation by Videoconference
I will be presenting November 2, 2007 at the Bridges 2Learning Provincial Inservice in Calgary, but I'll be doing that from my videoconference studios here in Penticton!
The conference is presented by the 2Learn.ca Education Society and will be looking primarily at the importancee of quality technology integration into curriculum. I will also share my own experience with our on-line professional development workshops and our collaborative workspaces, but as always, the essence of the presentation will be about technology assisted explorations into personal meaning and purpose. See you there.

Opening Keynote Presentation at the Future of Learning conference
I was thrilled to present the opening keynote at Symposium 2007, which looked at Distributed Learning in the 21st Century. It was held in Edmonton, Alberta October 17,18 and 19, 2007.
The conference was unique in that it brought together audiences from three usually seperate areas, K-12, Post Secondary, and workplace training. What was great about this, is that the conference organizers enabled and excited communication between the three, recognizing that learning is a life time afair, they invited and promoted discussion and exploration of what the future of learning could be for the lifelong learners of today and beyond.

Preserving Local Culture
The Director in the Classroom has been working with a group of students from the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, in British Columbia, Canada to create video projects that preserve, record and share the stories and culture of the Indian Band.
Over a ten week period The Director in the Classroom will help guide students through the filmmaking process, providing suggestions, suport and ideas of how to create meaningful, student produced movies.
The students have been working in groups, exploring the ideas and stories that interest them the most about their culture, history and past. Upon choosing a topic each group has then approached an elder who holds the knowledge and stories about the different topics each group has chosen.
Through interviews the students have uncovered new understanding, knowledge and excitement about their heritage, culture and community. In recording these interviews the students have also begun to create a rich resource that can be used and shared among the community, for use now and in the future.
At the end of the ten weeks, a copy of each movie will be screened at the Indian Band office, in front of the elders that were interviewed as well as families and friends of the students and the community. A copy of each movie will be archived at the Band Office.
We are proud to be a part of preserving the culture and stories of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band and we look forward to sharing the student produced movies with you on our website in the future.

Nikos Speaks to the Council of Education Facility Planners International
Nikos recently spoke to the BC Chapter of the Council of Education Facility Planners as part of a Professional Development Seminar on the topic of Designing Learning Environments for the Digital Student.
Nikos with over fifteen years of experience teaching digital media in the classroom discussed his thoughts and ideas of how a classroom and school might be designed and repurposed with digital technology and media in mind.
"We must think of the buildings we build, not as schools, but as studios, where learning involves creating with spaces for exhibition, collaboration and design. As we begin designing classrooms for the 21st Century we must look at both the technical side of wireless technologies and central servers, and the human side of storytelling.
Given a choice between a school and a studio, where would you rather wake up and go to in the morning?"

Great Posters for the Classroom
The four most often asked questions we receive are "How can I organize the filmmaking groups?", "How can I keep track of which group is doing what?", "How do I prepare each group for filmming?" and "How can I explain the process and planning to students who just want to grab a camera and go?"
These great questions have prompted the creation of four great classroom posters. Available individually or as a set, they will help organize the classroom studio, keep filmmakers on track, and present the filmmaking process in a series of easy to follow steps. These posters are laminated, so you or your students can write on them with dry erase markers, and reuse them for each video project. Here's what they look like...
