PRODUCTION TEAM FEEDBACK

MAY 13, 2002

Hello Cassie, Amanda, Molly and Erin.

Thank you for the update on your documentary, and congratulations. I think Mr. Carpenter will make a wonderful subject for your documentary.

What I would like you to do now is read the article on interviews, that is on my site, in your production office. You can enter your production office by typing in your password "Group2". There is a link under the task lists. This article will give you a better understanding of how to approach an interview with Mr. Carpenter, both in terms of a setting, and a technical approach for lighting, sound and camera.

As well, here are the answers to your questions that you posted on your site.

1. Who will see this and where??? ----Depending on what the interview is about, the audience may be the school, the community or others. It will depend a lot about what Mr. Carpenter is talking about, that it, it depends on what will be the subject of the video and what you are interested in about in Mr. Carpenters life. What do you think is interesting? Is it that he has seen changes in Scott county, if so, perhaps “change” will be the subject of your video.

2. When is the deadline to have this finished??? ---I would like you to video tape it this week and edit a rough cut by the end of next week. It’s a bit rushed but we can do it, and more importantly, I know that you can do it.

3. How many questions do we need to ask in the interview??---There are no set numbers of questions that you have to ask, but I would like you to have at least 20 questions prepared related to your subject. If it is about change, then prepare some questions about some of the change that he has seen, like “What’s the difference in Schools, when you were in Grade 7 and today? You can have, and should have, more questions come up as you are there filming him, and think of new ideas to interview him. And as he talks about what he is interested in, then listen carefully and ask questions to have him talk about these things more.

4. Do we need to do more than one documentary?? ---Don’t worry about how many you make, Right now, focus on this one, and then I will help you decide what we will do next.

5. Does there need to be more than just the interview for our documentary?? ---It’s up to you, you could include the different things that we talked about that go into a documentary, like photos, old movies, sounds, drawings, etc. it’s up to you as directors to decide how you will bring what Mr Carpenter says to life, that is, how you will illustrate it. Surprise me!

6. Can we interview in more than one location?? --- Absolutely!

7. Does it need to be about the persons whole life or can we narrow it down to one single thing?? -----I think it would be a good idea to narrow it down to one part of Mr. Carpenters life, or one story that he wants to share, or one subject that he wants to talk about, for this first one. The final film should be less than 10 minutes. Even 5 minutes would be a great length. Buy don’t worry about the length yet.

So, go read, go film, and let me know what happens.
