What does a videoconference workshop look like?
The Director in the Classroom workshop does not look at all like a traditional videoconference where the camera sits motionless for hours on end.

We broadcast from a real production studio to create a three camera, multiple video source presentation, with Powerpoint slides and full screen movies. We employ blue screen techniques to combine our Powerpoint presentations with a live video feed and other video sources to create a dynamic, non-traditional videoconference experience for the participants. What is WebStudio?
For the web portion of the workshop the participants each receive their own password- protected access to The Director in the Classroom Web Studio. There they share a production office with the two or three other members of their group. Participants will post their shot list, storyboards and even rough cuts of their movies for feedback. This will happen over a one-month period, at their convenience.

Participants will receive specific technical training on the editing software from their local on-site trainers or from suggested online and offline sources. On the web site, there are additional resources, both online and offline, instructional materials and downloadable PDFs of charts and forms for each step of the filmmaking process. This allows the participants to go deep into more material and support as they require. It also features a question/answer session where they receive feedback from Nikos.

How long does the The Director in the Classroom workshop take?
The workshop lasts approximately one month and requires between 30-60 hours of participant time. View a sample Agenda for Two-day Videoconference Workshop.

What equipment do we need for videoconferencing?
For the Videoconferencing workshop we can transmit over IP or ISDN.

We use the new Polycom Viewstation FX equipment that can communicate with any other VC equipment that is standards-based. These include: Picture Tel, Tandberg, Sony, British Telecom, and Intel. We can produce video up to 30 Frames per sec.

We can transmit on ISDN from 128 to 384 and have the capability of transmitting at 512. On IP, our speed is 128k- 2MB and is only limited to who has how much and the throughput between sites.

What equipment do we need for the workshop?
Each group of three to four participants will require the following equipment.

  • DV Camera with microphone input
  • Microphone
  • Tripod
  • 3 Blank Tapes
  • Lights, if required
  • Access to the Web to collaborate with their group within their studio and to access further resources.
  • A computer with a video editing application.

What does the Workshop Organizer receive?
The workshop organizer receives the 'Setting up a Videoconference Workshop Guide', Student Registration Form and WebStudio Support.

    General Information

    • The workshop organizer receives two PDF files – a document for the Workshop binder and the contents of the Workshop CD can be downloaded from the workshop organizer's administration page. Both of these can be reproduced for the purpose of the workshop for the participants.
    • The workshop organizer sends us the list of participants with their email and school information.
    • We will send a Filemaker file to print a binder cover, binder spine, videocassette label and name tag for each participant... all with The Director in the Classroom logo.
    • On the group’s WebStudio site, there is an administration section where the workshop organizer enters the names and emails of the participants.
    • During the first workshop, the participants will be divided into groups of three or four. The workshop organizer uses the WebStudio administration section to assign participants to a group with their own unique username and password.
    • Participants log on to their group's WebStudio. There, they will share info, review materials and decide what their project will be.
    • For the editing section of the workshop, the participants may need training on the video editing application. If the workshop organizer has any web sites with local resources or training they should be sent to us. We will incorporate them as links into their workshop web site.

Can I use Mac or PC for filmmaking?
Although filmmaking operates in a digital world and a computer would be a useful tool for many of the ten stages of making a video, it is only necessary at the eighth stage – Editing and the ninth stage – Presentation. The video editing may be done on either Mac or PC.

    Macintosh
iMovie and Final Cut Pro are the most popular. We provide an iMovie Checklist and specialized support by email from Barry Underwood: bunderwood@telus.net. For Final Cut Pro, contact Gary McDougall: gary@thedirectorintheclassroom.com

    PC
There is a wide range of video editing software available. Here is a quick quide for editing with Studio 8 by Pinnacle.

For additional training we recommend http://www.atomiclearning.com/
